Background
The Bergen Scottish Society was established in April 2005 following a highly successful, but Haggisless, Burn's Night Supper in January of that year.
The aim of the Society is to promote and celebrate Scottish culture in Bergen and Scotland's close and longstanding relationship with Norway and Hordaland Fylke.
A Burns Night Supper is the traditional dinner held to celebrate the birth of our national poet, Robert Burns, who was born 25th January 1759. This evening of feasting, speeches, recitals of poetry and country dancing will be an annual anchor point for members and guests. Other events include celebration of our patron saint with a 'Ceilidh ' - Gaelic word for a party night including many dances- which are easy to learn and we will help those new to them!
West Norway and Scotland enjoy many cultural links which reach back at least to the Viking times of the 9th century, through traders of the middle - ages, storm driven wayward fishing boats, to the 'Shetland Bus' and commando raids of WWII, university study and tourism up to now and of course the economic cooperation in the oil industry and fish farming industries.
